The Platinum American Eagle was first minted in 1997. Interestingly, the proof coins in the series feature different images on the reverse side each year but the bullion versions all contain the same images on the front and back of the coins.
John Mercanti, the US Mint chief engraver responsible for the reverse design of the American Silver Eagle coin also designed the obverse image used on the American Platinum Eagle coin.
The back of the coin contains the image of a bald eagle soaring over the sun setting in the distance. Engravings on this side include “United States of America,” as well as the coin’s weight, metal content, purity, and face value.
American Platinum Eagle coins are minted using .9995 platinum and have a face value of $100. This is actually the highest face value of any 1 oz bullion coin from the US Mint which also mints gold and silver American Eagle coins. All of these items are available for direct purchase from Goldline and also are eligible to be placed in a self-directed IRA for retirement purposes.
The United States Mint produces American Platinum Eagle coins at both its West Point Mint and its Philadelphia Mint.
